4 Easily Overlooked Details To Remember When Planning A Move

Posted on

You have finally found a new home, now you can start that new chapter in your life. But first, you have to get moved from your current residence into your new home. With contacting a residential moving service, packing, and cleaning your old residence, planning a move can be a stressful and overwhelming situation. With so many things to do it is easy to overlook some of the details involved in residential moving. To help reduce some of your stress and to ensure you haven't overlooked anything, here are a few tips to help you remember a few of the most commonly overlooked details of moving.

Make Sure There's Sufficient Parking

One of the first things a residential moving company will ask you before they arrive to help pack up your belongings is where they should park. It easier on you, your neighbors and those providing the moving services if you plan ahead when it comes to where the moving truck should park. If you are moving from or into an apartment complex, remember to talk to the apartment manager of both places about parking recommendations. If you are moving from or into a single house, make sure there is sufficient parking on the street or in your driveway.

Label Every Box

As you are packing up your old house, it is important to pack each room individually and to label each box as you pack it. Not only will labeling the boxes make it easier for the residential movers to know where to put the boxes in your new home, but it also makes unpacking easier and much quicker. Labeling means you won't be surprised by what's in the boxes and you will know right away what goes where.

Don't Forget to Clean the Refrigerator

The refrigerator is usually the last thing people clean and pack before moving, so it is easy to forget to clean it, especially if you aren't moving the appliances with you. The day before your move, remove all items from the refrigerator, toss out all old and outdated food, thoroughly clean the inside and outside of the refrigerator and pack food items in small coolers, insulated bags or plastic grocery bags. Store the food in the refrigerator until the next day when you are ready to move. If you are moving your appliances with you, remember to empty and clean the ice bins to prevent water from leaking out.

Change of Address Notices

One of the easiest things to overlook during the moving process is providing schools, caregivers, banks and businesses with your new address. About 1-2 weeks before moving day, you should contact the following businesses/people:

When you are packing up your belongings, remember to pack a survival kit for the first night in your new home. Your survival kit should include items, such as blankets and pillows or sleeping bags, pajamas, paper plates, plastic utensils, snacks, the coffee maker and coffee cups. It is also a good idea to add a few non-perishable items, such as microwave meals.
